It's like the writer doesn't trust that her writing is really good (and seriously the writing otherwise IS good. Then, FINALLY, the other character will say a line back, and then there are another 3-5 paragraphs explaining in assume-the-reader-is-dumb detail about why that line of dialogue caused more emotions to course through their body as the character remembers more things that we the reader also already remember, and so on. Seriously, a character will say one line, then there will be 3-5 paragraphs of exposition where the character remembers things that we the readers already remember, then there's a repetitive description about how something or another is coursing through their body (seriously there are A LOT of emotions constantly coursing through their bodies). The worst part about the exposition is that it happens in between every single line of dialogue. But there is one problem that undermines it all: there is SO MUCH EXPOSITION, 95% of which is totally unnecessary. In terms of the story, there's so much to like: great dialogue, off-the-charts chemistry between the MCs, likeable characters, fun plot. Faircombe means the world to her, and she's willing to do just about anything to make sure it flourishes.Įven if it means working with Taylor, whose path seems to continuously be crossing with Brooke's everywhere she turns.įirst off, the narration is phenomenal. Unlike Taylor, Brooke loves their town so much that she's spent her adult life dedicated to making sure it doesn't get swept away like many of the other declining small cities of the American South.

And a lifelong knowledge of Taylor means that Brooke knows she's trouble: irresponsible, takes nothing seriously, and irritatingly attractive. Very few things can hold her attention back in Faircombe: her sister/best friend, her precocious niece, and perhaps the prospect of riling up Brooke Watson.īrooke has known Taylor for her entire life, given that her best friend is Taylor's younger brother.
